Existential Dread
Vietnamese American mother addiction poetry

Our Take

Vuong writes a letter to his illiterate mother about the life she could not read — the Vietnamese American childhood, the drug-addicted first love, the formation of a poet out of poverty and tenderness. Each sentence is doing two things at once. The love story with Trevor is the most delicate and most devastating section.
