Kya Clark is abandoned by her family in the North Carolina marshes at age ten and grows up feral and magnificent. The murder mystery gives the novel structure; the marsh gives it texture; the loneliness gives it everything else. The ending reveals what Kya is capable of — not what you expected from a girl who just wanted not to be left.
