race publishing guilt identity

Our Take

June Hayward steals a dead Chinese American writer's manuscript and publishes it as her own. Kuang makes the publishing industry the villain and June the instrument — an ordinary white woman doing what ordinary white women are permitted to do. The spiral of rationalization is exquisite and damning.
